Signage design for hippo house renovation.
In 2017, I was invited by Taipei Zoo to redesign the signage for the hippopotamus exhibit's renovation. The new exhibit is twice as big as the old one and features a new, powerful water filter. The main attraction of this renovation is the new underwater view, which allows visitors to see the hippos face-to-face instead of from a higher spot.
Hippos are not commonly found in zoos worldwide due to the high cost of keeping them. Most zoos with hippos have less than three, but Taipei Zoo has 13 hippos, a remarkable number for an enclosure. Many foreign zoo workers were surprised to see so many hippos in one place.
Zoo signage includes warning signs, wayfinding signs, and prohibition signs. Most of the signs are stickers bought from markets. However, the new signage I designed for this renovation is entirely different from the traditional ones and complements the zoo's details perfectly. It was an honor to be an independent designer for this renovation.
